'Kicking the Tires' on Electric Vehicles
MGE and the Madison Area Chinese Community Organization (MACCO) partner to host electric vehicle outreach event.
MGE's "Kick the Tires" event in partnership with MACCO offered a look at several electric and hybrid vehicles.
Dozens of people turned out one Saturday in May to MGE's Good Neighbor Parking Lot for an event spearheaded by MGE's May Lor. A residential services manager at MGE, Lor works to educate around energy efficiency within the Madison area's Asian community. This time, however, she wanted to focus on the benefits—and growing variety—of electric vehicles (EVs).
"I wanted them to see some actual EVs in person and to interact with EV owners and MGE experts on what it's like to have an EV. Electrifying transportation is an important part of our Energy 2030 framework for creating a more sustainable future for our community," explained Lor.
Lor, who is bilingual, partnered with the MACCO to host the event. MACCO helped to translate MGE's EV-related information into Chinese ahead of the event.
MGE Residential Services Manager May Lor shares EV and charging information with attendees.
"This was a great initiative that will help our community," said MACCO President Connie Jing Li. "I am very interested in our members learning more about vehicles that will help protect the environment."
"Transportation accounts for 25% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. By electrifying transportation, we can reduce this impact," MGE President and CEO Jeff Keebler told attendees.
MGE worked with MACCO to provide EV literature printed in Chinese.
Keebler shared how EVs will help MGE and its customers reach our shared energy goal of reduced carbon emissions. MGE has targeted a 40% reduction in carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 2030 and a reduction of at least 80% by 2050. We are working with customers to advance our goals by investing in renewable resources, promoting electric vehicles and facilitating charging, and increasing engagement around energy efficiency.
"We can't achieve our goals alone. It will take all of us working together to achieve these goals," said Keebler.
Growing variety of electric vehicles available
There are more than 40 EV models available in almost every vehicle class. A number of them lined the stalls near MGE's DC fast charger, one of 30 public charging stations in MGE's public charging network, which is powered by wind energy.
