October Marks Energy Efficiency Day

Celebrate the wise use of energy on Oct. 5—and put good habits in place for every day!

When you think about how you use energy, what comes to mind?
  • Shutting off the light switch or turning off the TV when you leave a room?
  • Lowering the temperature on your household thermostat in the fall and winter?
  • Replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs in your home?

Perhaps none of these actions is top of mind all of the time, but with Energy Efficiency Day approaching, it may be time to consider how we all can reduce our individual energy use with simple, everyday actions.

Lowering our energy use can save energy, of course, but also can help save money and reduce our impact on the environment.  Friday, Oct. 5 is recognized as Energy Efficiency Day. Join MGE in celebrating energy efficiency! Check out these tips, practice them at home and let's work together toward a more sustainable future.

  • Clean your clothes efficiently: A washing machine spends an estimated 90% of its energy to heat water. Consider using cold water instead. In addition, try to run full loads as much as possible because the machine uses roughly the same amount of energy regardless of the load size.
  • Wash dishes wisely: Avoid the “rinse hold” cycle and skip heated drying – simply open the door at the end of the washing cycle and let the dishes air dry.
  • Make the switch to LEDs: Replace 5-10 incandescent bulbs at home or at the office with LED bulbs. LEDs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last longer.
  • Turn off electronics:  Smart Power StripThat sounds easy, but too often we forget and leave unused electronics plugged in. You can schedule your thermostat to increase the temperature when you are returning home or waking up.
