Fall into Energy Savings
Smart thermostats, window coverings can make saving energy almost effortless.
Fall—a time for new routines and, for many, a change of pace from the more relaxed days of summer. Whether it's school, sporting events or the busy social season, it can be easy to lose track of your household energy use. Here are a few quick and simple ways to save energy and control costs this season.
Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. These internet-connected thermostats automatically adjust your household's heating and cooling systems, lowering the temperature when you're away in the winter or raising it in the summer. Like other smart devices, smart thermostats can be controlled remotely and automatically adjust to your household routine.
Wisconsin's Focus on Energy program is offering an incentive on smart thermostats for eligible MGE customers. To learn more, visit focusonenergy.com/smart
Take advantage of the sun
On warm days, closing shades or curtains will help keep your home cool and save on air-conditioning costs. Conversely, on cool days, let in the sunlight to help keep your home comfortable.
Prepare for cooler days
As the days get chillier, resist using electric space heaters for heat. Using your furnace, even if it is for just a few hours a day, is more energy efficient than using a space heater.
A portable electric space heater can be one of the most expensive ways to heat your home. You will not save money using an electric space heater unless you turn your central heating system down several degrees and use it to warm only a small area. And, be sure to take all necessary safety precautions!
