How and When You Use Energy Matters

Reducing and shifting energy use helps manage the grid—and costs.

If you're looking for ways to make an impact, energy efficiency is a key strategy for reducing carbon emissions. This includes considering how and when you use energy.

Peak energy use typically occurs weekdays between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. when the majority of our customers are working, running household appliances and more.

Smart technologies, such as Wi-Fi-connected thermostats and electric vehicle (EV) charging, help us shift energy use to off-peak periods. This helps MGE to manage the grid for optimal efficiency and helps to manage long-term costs for all customers.

MGE Connect

MGE Connect® is our demand response program for smart devices, including thermostats. With customers' permission, minor temperature adjustments are made to participating customers' smart thermostats to reduce energy use during periods of high demand.

On June 25, for example, with a high of 90°F and humid conditions, more than 6,200 MGE electric customers enrolled in MGE Connect helped reduce usage by more than 5 megawatts. That's equal to the amount of power produced by more than 15,500 solar panels.

Charge Ahead

As more drivers transition to EVs, MGE is working with customers to manage when EVs charge. With smart charging, customers set a charging schedule and their EV is ready by the time they need it.

MGE's Charge Ahead program uses a software platform to communicate with the EV. This allows MGE to optimize when the vehicle is charging. Participating customers (on a standard rate) who charge their EVs during off-peak hours (weekdays from 9 p.m. to 10 a.m. plus weekends and holidays) can earn up to $8 per month in the summer and $4 per month the rest of the year. Visit mge.com/chargeahead to learn more. By managing demand through smart devices, EV charging and other emerging technologies, we can optimize our grid to meet customers' needs sustainably and cost-effectively.
