Celebrating a Year of Clean Energy
Our Saratoga Wind Farm is capable of producing enough energy to power about 47,000 households.
MGE's 66-megawatt Saratoga Wind Farm
near Saratoga, Iowa, recently celebrated its first anniversary! Our largest and newest wind farm has 33 turbines that generate enough clean energy to power about 47,000 households.
Saratoga is about 200 miles west of Madison—located in the northeast section of Iowa. This high, flat and open area provides an excellent wind resource. Iowa's strong winds combined with improved wind turbine technology help us cost-effectively deliver clean energy to our community grid. Check out our brief video for a glimpse into what it took to bring Saratoga online.
Saratoga's turbines extend nearly 500 feet tall, which is 210 feet higher than turbines at our Rosiere wind farm, which celebrated 20 years of operation in 2019
. MGE wind farms advance our Energy 2030 framework, under which we have committed to providing at least 30% of retail electric sales with renewable energy by 2030 and reducing carbon dioxide emissions at least 40% by 2030. By 2050, we are targeting net-zero carbon electricity.
